Greg’s Journey to Becoming Syatt’s First Scuba Instructor

By Greg Hood

Greg is currently training in Roatán to become Syatt’s first certified scuba instructor, expanding opportunities for youth to explore and protect the underwater world.

Early Start, Big Anticipation

Dragging myself out of bed at 3 a.m. this morning, I was met with the familiar grogginess of early travel, but beneath it all was a quiet sense of excitement for what the coming week might hold. By the time I boarded my second flight of the day, that feeling had grown into full anticipation.

First Glimpse of the Island

I had visited Roatán once before, but never with the opportunity to immerse myself here for an extended period of time. As the plane began its descent into Roatán, I caught my first glimpse of the island—a lush, green paradise surrounded by vibrant turquoise waters.

Entering a new country always brings a touch of anxiety, but once I passed through customs, that stress melted away, replaced by thoughts of the experiences and memories waiting to unfold.

Arrival at Seagrape Plantation Resort

Soon after, I arrived at the beautiful Seagrape Plantation Resort. Everything we could need was within walking distance, an inviting pool, a relaxing spa, a fully equipped dive center, and direct access to the ocean, all just steps from my room. I feel incredibly fortunate to be able to call this work.

After settling in, we enjoyed a delicious lunch that far exceeded my expectations. Later in the afternoon, I took a dip in the pool, which sits right in front of the ocean.

A Moment to Pause

As I floated in the water, I watched a pair of dive boats chasing a pod of dolphins along the horizon, an unforgettable sight that perfectly set the tone for the week ahead.

Evening Connections

One of the most anticipated parts of the day was the evening meet-and-greet. I had the privilege of sharing dinner with an inspiring group of passionate, talented, and deeply knowledgeable individuals.

Being surrounded by such driven and accomplished people reminded me why I’m here, and reignited my own desire to give back. I hope to one day create opportunities for young people that mirror the life-changing experiences YDWP has provided me.

Looking Ahead

We wrapped up the evening with a brief orientation, offering a glimpse of what’s to come. And now, as I sit down to reflect and write, I can’t help but feel immense gratitude and even more excitement for the journey that lies ahead.
