Connecting to Our Past

Underwater archaeology reveals stories that history books often overlook. Our diving programs focus on sites connected to the transatlantic slave trade, where sunken ships and artifacts hold crucial information about our ancestors' experiences.

These dives offer youth the opportunity to engage with tangible history firsthand. By documenting and studying these sites, participants gain valuable archaeological skills while contributing to a more complete historical record. These aren't just history lessons—they're hands-on recovery of narratives that deserve to be told.

Building Environmental Stewards

Coral reefs face unprecedented threats from climate change, pollution, and destructive fishing practices. Our youth learn practical reef restoration techniques, from coral fragment cultivation to outplanting methods that help damaged ecosystems recover.

These experiences create environmental stewards with specialized skills in marine conservation. Participants monitor reef health, document changes, and implement science-based restoration approaches that contribute to the preservation of the ecosystem.

Working With Leading Dive Programs

We're proud to collaborate with Youth Diving with a Purpose (DWP) and the Tennessee Aquatic Program. Together through CARES (Collective Action for Restoring Our Ecosystems), we're making a difference in marine conservation while creating opportunities for our youth to develop valuable skills and connections.

These partnerships allow us to offer comprehensive training that prepares participants for both recreational enjoyment and professional advancement in underwater fields. While our programs focus on youth development, adults are also welcome to join our diving community and experience the transformative power of underwater exploration.

We provide pathways from basic certification through advanced specialty training for those interested in becoming certified divers. Many of our youth participants have become certified divers, with some pursuing professional opportunities in marine science, conservation, and underwater archaeology.

We're creating hands-on programs that connect young people to meaningful, future-facing work. Currently, our youth are actively engaged in coral reef restoration and underwater archaeology, which is tied to the histories of enslaved Africans. They're gaining real skills in research, preservation, and marine science, while honoring stories that have been ignored or buried for generations.

Cultural Resource Management at Lake Erie

As we grow, we're bringing our underwater expertise closer to home. Working with professors from Indiana University of Pennsylvania, Texas A&M University, and the Seneca Nation of Indians, we're developing programming focused on Lake Erie. This collaboration will create opportunities for youth to learn underwater Cultural Resource Management (CRM) skills - a professional field with growing demand.

Lake Erie's underwater landscape contains numerous archaeological treasures. Until approximately 4,000 years ago, Lake Erie was lower than it is today, leaving large areas of the modern lake bottom open for human habitation. These submerged landscapes hold important cultural and historical information that requires specialized skills to document and preserve.

Our planned Lake Erie programming will teach youth essential underwater archaeology skills:

  • Marine remote sensing and data interpretation
  • Underwater landscape reconstruction
  • Geoarchaeological coring and analysis
  • Research diving techniques
  • Underwater recording methods
  • Drone survey and remotely operated vehicle operation

This training prepares participants for potential careers in offshore energy development, environmental assessment, cultural resource preservation, and academic research. The skills developed align with those required for professional underwater CRM work, creating pathways to meaningful employment opportunities.

Our diving programs create multiple layers of impact:

  • Historical Documentation: Recording and preserving underwater cultural heritage sites before they deteriorate further
  • Environmental Protection: Contributing to conservation efforts that address urgent marine and freshwater ecosystem challenges
  • Career Pathways: Opening doors to professions where Black representation has historically been limited
  • Community Education: Sharing discoveries through exhibits, presentations, and digital storytelling

Join Us Underwater

Whether you're interested in history, environmental conservation, or professional skill development, our diving programs offer meaningful ways to engage. No prior diving experience is required. We provide comprehensive training from the basics through advanced certification.
